A Beginner's Guide to Vietnam Train Travel: From Online Booking to Leaving the Station

Stepping away from rushed flights, boarding the Reunification Express is the perfect way to feel the heartbeat of Vietnam. Whether you start from the quiet ancient capital of Ninh Binh heading South, or travel upstream from the coastal city of Da Nang to the North, the tips below will make your journey smooth and stylish.

1. Online Booking & Seat Selection

Forget the image of long queues at the station ticket counters. The Vietnamese railway system has now caught up with the digital world. You can easily hunt for tickets via online platforms with just a few taps.

Book tickets at the official website dsvn.com, the MoMo app, or through supported banking apps. The MoMo app interface is very user-friendly and allows you to view the train seating chart conveniently.

The perfect choice: For long trips (like the Ninh Binh - Da Nang route, taking over 10 hours), prioritize the 4-berth air-conditioned sleeper cabin (Bottom berth). The private space, soft mattress, and large glass windows will turn your train cabin into a mobile hotel room.

Core principle: Never be careless with your personal information. Your name and Passport/ID number when booking must match your original documents 100%. When boarding, staff will scan the QR code on your e-ticket and cross-check your documents with absolute precision.

2. The 30,000 VND "Spine-Saving" Service

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is trying to manage bulky luggage through narrow station stairs or tunnels by themselves. Advice from seasoned travelers? Look for the "porters" at the station.

Right at the lobby of Ninh Binh or Da Nang station, you will easily spot station staff with specialized trolleys. For a very modest fee – about 30,000 VND (approx. $1.20) per trip – all your heavy suitcases will be smoothly transported right to your carriage door.

This is not just a smart expense to protect your health; it also helps you maintain your most elegant demeanor when stepping onto the trans-Vietnam train.

Food & Onboard Amenities

That day when we boarded, my family was afraid there would be no food, so we packed plenty of water, bread, etc., planning to cover all 3 meals. However, the train sells everything: breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all available. They also sell water, coffee, boiled corn, sweet potatoes, balut... you name it. Every once in a while, the staff will push food carts through the cabins, and the prices are very reasonable, not overpriced at all.

In the sleeper cabin, there are electrical outlets to charge your phone, so you just need to have mobile data (4G), and time will pass very quickly. One minus point of the train is probably the restroom; it's not very comfortable because it rocks back and forth. I chose to travel overnight, drank less water on board, and when the train stopped at stations, I would step off to use the station's restrooms for a cleaner and more comfortable experience.

3. "The Last Mile": Encountering the Vibrant Cityscape

The eager feeling when the train slowly rolls into the destination station is always very special. But how do you travel from the station to your resort in the smoothest way possible?

The Taxi & Xanh SM fleet: Unlike the tranquility on the train, the pace of life outside the doors of Ninh Binh and Da Nang stations is always bustling with long lines of waiting vehicles. Our advice is to experience Xanh SM – the electric taxi brand creating a fever in Vietnam.

The green experience: These Cyan-colored electric cars are not only eye-catching, completely odorless, and engine-noise-free, but they also have dense coverage in tourist cities. You can easily book a ride via their app to know the fare in advance, completely avoiding the hassle of bargaining or soliciting.

4. Flexible Itinerary: Reversing the Da Nang - Ninh Binh Route

All the experiences above are not only true for the North-to-Central journey. You can completely apply all these tips for the reverse direction: Da Nang to Ninh Binh.

The train leaving Da Nang station carries the scent of the sea, crossing the majestic Hai Van Pass to bring you back to the ancient capital shaded by lotus ponds and rolling limestone mountains. The process of buying tickets, using porter services (30,000-50,000 VND/trip), or calling a Xanh SM taxi at both ends is equally convenient.

"Ninh Binh shaded by limestone mountains or a Da Nang full of sun and wind? You don't have to choose. The North-South railway will sweep you into a slow-motion cinematic film, where the journey itself truly becomes part of the vacation. Below is the complete 'art of train travel' for modern wanderlusts."

I would never be able to accomplish, as I always assumed my physical stamina had its limits. Even though I’ve supported room bookings and provided travel information for many clients on their cross-Vietnam trips for years, this was the first time I actually tried driving such a long route myself.
